CARF logo Starkey Inc. has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), headquartered in Tucson, Ariz., an independent, nonprofit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process that centers on enhancing the lives of individuals served at the organization it reviews. Accreditation is a voluntary quality review process on the part of the organization. A three-year accreditation represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization.
Starkey was accredited in three areas of community services – community housing, community integration and supported living – in four areas of employment services – job development, job supports, job-site training and organizational employment services, and in governance.
Angel Tree gifts

Each year, Starkey employees, families and members of the community join together to take names from the Starkey Angel Tree, which benefits individuals with disabilities who have no resources or family connections to make it possible for them to receive a gift during the holiday season.

Art gallery at Starkey Individuals in the Passport Program at Starkey are learning how to draw and paint from local volunteer Nila Parker. A permanent display for their original creations has been installed in the Morrison Building at Starkey, 144 S. Young St.
Midwest Beerfest Starkey booth Starkey benefited again from the silent auction again this year at the AIWF Midwest Beerfest held October 16, 2009 at Century II. Generous community supporters donated almost 150 items for the silent auction booth and 50 volunteers gave their time.

Starkey Ice Cream Social

Starkey's ice cream social on August 20, 2009 drew a crowd of individuals and families, as well as local officials, including Rep. Nile Dillmore, City Council member Janet Miller, Sen. Dick Kelsey and Sen. Jean Schodorf.

Starkey bus

Starkey will receive four new 20-passenger buses as part of $6.6 million in federal stimulus funding coming to the city of Wichita for transportation.

Learjet volunteers
Thirteen members of Learjet's IT department volunteered their time on August 14, 2009, constructing garden bed kits that will be placed at Starkey homes and at the Gateway program.
Starkey participates in CERT training Nineteen Starkey employees from all areas of the organization completed Community Emergency Response Training (CERT Training) in July 2009 conducted by Sedgwick County Emergency Management professionals. CERT educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
Starkey home summer garden Residents of one Starkey home have planted a vegetable garden that is yielding a summer bounty of tomatoes, green beans, squash, watermelon, peppers and various types of herbs!

Earl and Mathilda Goebel LIGHTHouse Project A donor appreciation dinner June 7, 2009, recognized the many supporters of the LIGHTHouse Project.

Starkey booth at Boeing Earth Day Starkey representatives displayed information at Boeing Earth Day at the Sedgwick County Zoo April 23. They distributed 890 stickers to area elementary students reminding families to recycle their electronic items, such as computers, printers, faxes, cell phones and monitors.
Starkey receives award Starkey was honored March 18 at InterHab's CommonUnity reception in Topeka for its 79 years of service to Kansans with disabilities. The Capper Foundation in Topeka also received a longevity award for its 89 years of service. Rep. JoAnn Pottorff of Wichita and other disability organizations were honored at the reception, which was attended by Kansas legislators.

Festival of Giving benefits Starkey Starkey benefited from the generosity of the Girl Scouts during their annual Festival of Giving. On December 13, Scout troops brought their donations to Century II, where Starkey and other charitable organizations received a bounty of purchased and hand-crafted items.

Starkey LIGHTHouse media announcement Starkey's LIGHTHouse Project was announced to the public November 20, with the Goebel Family-Star Lumber Charitable Foundation sharing the name for its home - The Earl and Mathilda Goebel Home - toward which it has contributed $75,000. Starkey supporters have given $200,573 toward the local match required for low-income housing tax credits, for which Starkey will apply in February 2009 to fund the majority of the cost of building the three homes, which will support people with disabilities who have dementia. Non-perishable food for hunger food drive The Nonprofit Chamber of Service - a local association of nonprofits, of which Starkey is a member - is conducting a Unified Nonprofit Food Drive during the month of November to benefit the Kansas Food Bank. More than 200 nonprofit organizations in Wichita will collaborate for this year’s food drive. To participate, bring non-perishable food items to the front lobby of either the Maple or Young Street building at Starkey during the month of November. The Kansas Food Bank serves more than 400 agencies in 86 Kansas counties, and distributes 4.5 million pounds of food each year.
