Larkin is employee of month John Larkin, an individual in Starkey's Supported Employment program, was named employee of the month (first shift) for April at Johnson Controls, a local manufacturer of heating and air conditioning systems. John has been employed at the company for almost 11 years.
Windwagon Smith visits Starkey Gary Gibbs, Admiral Windwagon Smith XXXV for the Wichita River Festival, visited Starkey's Work Activity program on April 11. He was joined by 19 Prairie Schooner Mates, area high school students who were selected to be youth ambassadors for the festival.
Poker tournament The Starkey Poker Tournament on March 30 at Terradyne Country Club was a fantastic event, and raised funds for the LIGHTHouse Project. Learn more about this campaign here. The top five finishers were (at left): Jim Hull (winner), Sue Green, Jeremy Banning, Mike Sullivan and Ron Eilers.

Johnson’s Landscaping borrowed a number of computer memory sticks from Starkey’s electronic recycling program to create plant markers for their exhibit March 5-9 at the Wichita Garden Show.
The theme of this year’s show is “Getting Green Smart in the Yard,” with a focus on recycling. The company’s representatives will return the memory sticks to Starkey after the show to “re-recycle” them.
Circle of Friends

On February 12, Starkey hosted a Valentine’s Day party for 15 National Honor Society students from Bishop Carroll High School and 10 persons served from Starkey. The students from Bishop Carroll are part of the Circle of Friends, a national organization linking high school students and people who have special needs.


Passport sewing project Participants in Starkey's Passport program have made weighted blankets for children with disabilities at Rainbows United during the month of January. Rectangles of fabric are sewn together, filled with rice, then sewn closed and assembled into a blanket. When children with autism use the weighted blankets on their arms or backs, the pressure has a calming and soothing effect.
Family Video turkey donation Representatives from the Family Video stores on west Central in Wichita and in Bel Aire donated 40 turkeys to the Starkey community living settings. They delivered the turkeys December 19, making for a wonderful holiday surprise for the individuals in Starkey's homes throughout Wichita!
Volunteer Awards At their annual meeting October 2, the members of Starkey Inc. elected seven board members and presented three volunteer awards to Boeing, whose volunteers helped clean up the main facility and build a planter for the Life Enrichment program; Cargill Meat Solutions, whose volunteers did a home makeover in three hours; and Becky Sell, a Starkey parent who drives hundreds of miles each month to maintain the bulletin board in the cafeteria.

boeing volunteers Boeing volunteers spent the day at Starkey on September 8, 2007, constructing planters, painting and cleaning up the grounds as part of the Boeing Good Neighbor Days.
bus On September 12, 2007, Starkey Inc. was named Kansas Transit Provider of the Year by the Kansas Public Transit Association. Through its contract with the city of Wichita, Starkey provided almost 200,000 one-way rides last year for people with disabilities.
recycling computers at schools In September 2007, Starkey Inc. was named the Wichita school district's exclusive vendor to recycle all of its computers and electronic items. The Wichita Public Schools and Starkey began their partnership on a trial basis in June. Since that time, Starkey representatives have picked up more than 1,000 computers, monitors and printers from 21 Wichita schools. At Starkey's main facility, individuals with disabilities are paid to disassemble the electronics and sort the parts for recycling.
