Shift Happens resources

In his book Shift Happens, Dr. George Suess illustrates how proactive behavior management can reduce "problem time" for people with disabilities, children and others.

In general, if an individual experiences the following, he or she will have more consistently engaged, positive behavior:

  • Enjoying caring relationships
  • Experiencing success
  • Receiving lavish praise and reinforcement
  • Building self-esteem
  • Participating in educational activities
  • Feeling productive
  • Taking part in engaging activities
  • Having opportunities for individual choice in activities
  • Experiencing smaller, more personal ratios of support staff
  • Feeling that he or she has a network of friends and community
